His first major public recognition came from the Nescafe Gold Blend ads in the early 1980s, a romantic serial campaign that ran over a decade. He performed at the Royal National Theatre and played Frank-N-Furter in the West End revival of The Rocky Horror Show. He met Sarah Fisher during Danton's Death at the National. They were together from 1982 until her death in 2025.

Rupert Giles in Buffy

When Joss Whedon cast Head in 1997, he was creating something new for American television: a British mentor figure who was not a joke, a man of books and tradition who was quietly formidable. Head was a series regular through Season 5 and a recurring guest in Seasons 6 and 7. He appeared in 121 episodes total.

His most celebrated work remains Hush, Season 4's near-silent episode, and The Body, the Season 5 episode about the sudden death of Buffy's mother. He also sang on the show, including the celebrated musical episode Once More With Feeling. He reprised Giles in the 2023 Audible drama Slayers: A Buffyverse Story.

Merlin, Ted Lasso and Beyond

From 2008 to 2012 he played Uther Pendragon in the BBC fantasy Merlin. On film he appeared opposite Meryl Streep in The Iron Lady, played Chiron in Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, and voiced Alfred in Batman: Gotham by Gaslight. His most recent major role was Rupert Mannion in Ted Lasso. His daughter Emily Head appeared alongside him in The Inbetweeners. Daisy Head played Genya Safin in Shadow and Bone.

The Losses That Surrounded His Final Years

Sarah Fisher died suddenly in late December 2025 at age 61. The couple had been together since 1982. Head spoke about Fisher throughout his career as the foundation of everything. He had just five months to live after losing her. He also mourned the deaths of his Buffy castmates Michelle Trachtenberg and Nicholas Brendon in the same period.
