Tupac, Snoop and a Release Date

Tupac Shakur is appearing in a video game. Not an archival clip, not a sample. A full character. Stranger Than Heaven, the next major release from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, confirmed at Summer Game Fest 2026 that the iconic rapper who died in 1996 will appear as a character named Amaru, made possible with the permission and supervision of his estate, Amaru Entertainment. Snoop Dogg appeared on stage to announce it personally. The game launches January 15, 2027.

Quick Summary

Stranger Than Heaven is an action-adventure game developed by RGG Studio and published by Sega. It is a prequel to the Like a Dragon franchise spanning 50 years across five historical periods from 1915 to 1965. It launches January 15, 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC via Steam, and Xbox Game Pass on day one.

What Happened at SGF 2026

The new trailer revealed additional cast members, confirmed the release date, and dropped the Tupac announcement. The reveal trailer showed a brief glimpse of the character in Japanese-style clothing with the iconic red bandana tied around his forehead.

RGG Studio Head Masayoshi Yokoyama came on stage to confirm the date. He was then joined by Snoop Dogg and his son Cordell Broadus, both of whom portray characters in the game. Snoop spoke directly about Tupac: "It just made sense to put him in this game."

Sega's statement: "Tupac's portrayal of the character Amaru in Stranger Than Heaven is made possible with the permission and ongoing supervision of his estate, Amaru Entertainment. RGG Studio is treating this integration with the utmost respect for his legacy, crafting every aspect in close collaboration and without the use of AI."

The name Amaru is not a coincidence. Tupac's birth name was Lesane Parish Crooks, and his mother later gave him the name Makaveli Amaru Shakur. Amaru was his birth name.

What Stranger Than Heaven Is

The game follows Makoto Daito, a young man who is half-Japanese and half-American, mistreated in the United States because of his mixed heritage. After the death of his parents, he leaves America for Japan in 1915. He meets Yu Shinjo, who becomes Makoto's oldest friend and biggest rival. Also on the path is Orpheus, an international smuggler portrayed by Snoop Dogg.

The game spans five distinct cities and five decades, each with their own visual identity and social context. The 1965 chapter is effectively the birth of Kamurocho, the iconic setting of the entire Yakuza franchise.

Makoto is a singer and musician, and music is embedded into the mechanics. Players can record sounds from the environment and use them as inspiration for original songs.

The Tupac Question

The Kotaku review of the announcement described it as an ugly act of zombie capitalism. Parade reported fan reactions ranging from really gross to kinda cool. The counterargument is straightforward: Tupac's estate said yes. Snoop Dogg facilitated it and appeared on stage. The character is named after Tupac's own birth name. Sega confirmed no AI was used. Whether you find it respectful or distasteful rests on whether you believe a deceased person's likeness should ever be used this way at all.

The Full Cast

Snoop Dogg as Orpheus, with his son Cordell Broadus also portraying a character. Ado, one of Japan's most prominent contemporary musicians who performs anonymously, portrays a character and appears on the theme song. Tori Kelly, the Grammy-winning American singer, also portrays a character. Satoshi Fujihara from Official HIGE DANdism appears as a character and on the theme. Dean Fujioka, the Japanese-Chinese actor, portrays a character. Japanese actor Bunta Sugawara, who died in 2014, also appears with permission from his family, voiced by Takashi Ukaji.

How It Connects to Yakuza

Stranger Than Heaven is a prequel to the entire Like a Dragon franchise. The connection point is the Tojo Clan, the criminal organisation at the centre of almost every mainline Yakuza game. The clan's origins and the men who built it in mid-century Japan are what Stranger Than Heaven explores. You do not need to have played any Yakuza game to follow it. It is designed as a standalone entry point.
