What Happened

Toledo Police Deputy Chief Joseph Heffernan said officers were already on scene for festival security when the shooting started near Delaware Avenue and Glenwood Avenue. Preliminary investigation indicates at least two shooters were involved, and Heffernan said they were probably shooting at each other. Festivalgoers were struck as bystanders.

What Witnesses Saw

Kevin Berry, sitting in the neighborhood arboretum listening to live music with friends, heard a handful of gunshots. Everybody dropped to the ground. He saw a gun being thrown to the ground less than 50 feet away. Berry, who has medical training and served in the US Navy, walked through the arboretum afterward and found at least five people with visible gunshot wounds.

What Police Know About the Shooters

No suspects had been arrested as of the Saturday night press conference. Both shooters fled before officers could detain them. Investigative Lieutenant Dan Gerken said the investigation is running on three tracks: witness interviews, victim interviews, and video evidence. Police are asking anyone who captured footage to share it with the department.

The Victims

The youngest victim is 14 years old. The oldest is 61. Most of the wounded are in their 20s. Two are in critical condition. Police did not release names of victims as of late Saturday.

Sunday Festival Cancelled

The Old West End Association cancelled Sunday's programming, saying: 'After discussion with festival organizers, law enforcement and the City of Toledo, we feel that it would not be compassionate, responsible or possible to continue the festival.'

Government Response

Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz called it senseless gun violence. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine said summer festivals should be safe spaces for families. Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur called it a tragic set of events and asked the public to keep northwest Ohio in their prayers.
